Pixar’s next feature, Elemental, is set to premiere in theaters this weekend, and with it will be a new Up short called “Carl’s Date,” which features one of the last performances of Ed Asner as the voice of the elderly Carl, who—with help from his dog Dug (Bob Peterson, who also wrote and directed the short)—preps for a date.
In the lead up to the short’s premiere (and the movie’s release), Pixar put out a trailer for “Carl’s Date.” And in it, we see Carl panicking about being asked out and trying to figure out how to prepare for it. Candy? Flowers? Dog treats? They all seem like viable options. We also see Dug realize that he has aged like the rest of us and is now and old dog (who can’t learn new tricks).
Here is the movie’s synopsis:
Moviegoers will catch up with Carl as he reluctantly agrees to go on a date with a lady friend—but admittedly has no idea how dating works these days. Ever the helpful friend, Dug steps in to calm Carl’s pre-date jitters and offer some tried-and-true tips for making friends—if you’re a dog.
Adorable! “Carl’s Date” will open exclusively in theaters on June 16, 2023 before the viewing of Elemental.
